Oxford University Press has Published Book on Infectious Agents and Cancer
March 2010

The book entitled HPV and Other Infectious Agents in Cancer - Opportunities for Prevention and Public Health is now available from Oxford University Press. The authors are Hans Krueger and Dan Williams of H. Krueger & Associates Inc., together with Gavin Stuart (University of British Columbia Dean of Medicine), Rick Gallagher (Department Head, Cancer Control Research, British Columbia Cancer Agency) and Jon Kerner (Senior Scientific Advisor for Cancer Control and Knowledge Translation, Canadian Partnership Against Cancer). In this current and comprehensive text the authors review the basic science and clinical implications of individual infectious agents, while going beyond a mere update of the literature to offer insights on the current emerging prevention possibilities. This prevention perspective is what makes this particular text so valuable to researchers, epidemiologists, health care policy makers and oncologists. The discussion is organized to highlight the vital role of primary cancer prevention, and suggest directions for future research, practice and policy. Since HPV continues to be at the center of interest in the arena of infectious agents and cancer, the authors frame the majority of their discussion on this now-famous virus. Breast Cancer Prevention
October 2009

Beginning with the Saturday, October 3, 2009 edition of the Vancouver Sun, a weeklong series of articles was published on the topic of eliminating the burden of breast cancer in British Columbia and beyond. This important information was largely assembled under the umbrella of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (B.C./Yukon Region) and its campaign for “a future without breast cancer by 2020.” Of particular interest were the comments on prevention of breast cancer offered by Ms. Barbara Kaminsky (of the Canadian Cancer Society) and Dr. Carolyn Gotay (of UBC), chair and member respectively of the Prevention Working Group of the 2020 Task Force (see the Monday, October 5, 2009 Vancouver Sun Article). H. Krueger & Associates Inc. were pleased to research and prepare the background paper on the current science of breast cancer prevention that informed the thinking of the Working Group over the last year.

Karger has published The Prevention of Second Primary Cancers
July 2008

H. Krueger & Associates Inc., together with Dr. David McLean of the British Columbia Cancer Agency, are pleased to announce the publication of The Prevention of Second Primary Cancers: A Resource for Clinicians and Health Managers. The book, to be available in August 2008, addresses the issue of new (second primary) cancer developing in a person with a history of cancer. Interest in second primary cancers has paralleled the extraordinary improvement in curing primary cancers, which in turn has increased both the longevity of and the absolute number of survivors. Accordingly, the cumulative incidence of second primary cancer has grown, essentially driven by patients surviving long enough for other cancers to develop. The second primary cancer story has expanded as a by-product of increasing health awareness, early diagnosis of primary cancers, and therapeutic success. The Prevention of Second Primary Cancers is a synthesis of current research, covering a whole spectrum of first and second primary cancers and the association between them.

Expanded Screening Program for B.C. Newborns
July 3, 2008

Premier Gordon Campbell announced that the province is expanding its medical screening program for newborns. In a July 3, 2008 news release he noted that "Newborn babies in British Columbia deserve the very best chance to a healthy life -- that is why we are increasing the number of tests at birth to screen for 19 disorders, up from six. Screening newborns means earlier detection of treatable disorders. With specialized treatment, lifelong health problems such as development disorders, liver problems, brain damage, and even sudden death can be prevented, meaning a healthier life for newborns, and reduced future pressures on our health care system."

H. Krueger & Associates Inc., in collaboration with the Newborn Screening Advisory Committee chaired by Dr. Hilary Vallance, developed a five-year business plan for the enhanced newborn screening program. This business plan included a comparison of newborn screening services provided in each of the Canadian provinces, a projection of the number of new cases that would be detected with an enhanced screening program, and a detailed cost analysis of the proposed enhancement.

The expanded screening program will be phased in over the next 12 months, with full implementation expected by 2010.
